5 Steps to Developing requisite reasoning Skills in an Online Environment

Most of us have been there. Most higher education instructors have had to encounter some form of the classroom online. Some instructors have more former environments and may have a part of the class taking place online. Many times this will be in the form of a consulation forum, gradebook, or assignment log. Other times, the whole course may be online. With that being said, many instructors struggle to join considerable mental skills into the online environment.

Learning to join considerable mental into the online classroom may take time, but it is useful to put in the effort. Many students take away a best comprehension of the course material when they are challenged to think critically.

Here are some ideas to make your considerable mental transition seamless!

1) Setup class teams/groups. Allow students to collaborate with each other. Supply students with a list of questions and topics that reveal to the course objectives for the week. Give them a forum to discuss!

2) Supply an extract from a reading or the text. Ask the class to paraphrase, and "describe in their own words". Want the students to collaborate by replying and discussing each individuals interpretation.

3) Supply a list of questions at the beginning of the week. Ask the class to pick a specific query and discuss. Mid-week, ask the class to "swap" questions, and create a briefcase of responses.

4) Have a Socratic questioning session. Want the students to further discuss topics by presenting them with a list of Socratic questions. This would include questions such as "Why is this happening?" or "What is other way of seeing at this?". create a forum for students to have the discussion. Allow students to write back to each other with conception filled participation posts.

5) originate a turn over where the students can correlate and difference topics. This can be done in an online forum separate for each group. The group setting will allow for a smaller more intimate discussion, and open the door for great conversation!

The choice to create group forums for students in the online environment is a overwhelming asset to the online classroom. This can in many ways mirror the face to face classroom@ Students can be encouraged to think critically in the online classroom. It takes creativity and flexibility in the mind of the online instructor, but it can be done!
