A Brief History of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a graceful and artistic sport that requires a blend of strength, balance, agility, and muscle coordination, commonly performed on specialized apparatus. Gymnasts accomplish sequences of movements requiring flexibility, endurance, and kinesthetic awareness, such as handsprings, handstands, split leaps, aerials and cartwheels.

Gymnastics as we know it dates back to antique Greece. The early Greeks practiced gymnastics to prepare for war. Activities like jumping, running, discus throwing, wrestling, and boxing helped originate the muscles needed for hand-to-hand combat. Additional fitness practices used by the antique Greeks included methods for mounting and dismounting a horses and a range of circus carrying out skills.

Nadia Comaneci received the first exquisite score, at the 1976 Olympic Games held in Montreal, Canada. She was coached by the illustrious Romanian, Bela Karolyi. Comaneci scored four of her exquisite tens on the uneven bars, two on the equilibrium beam and one in the floor exercise. Nadia will all the time be remembered as "a fourteen year old, ponytailed exiguous girl" who showed the world that perfection could be achieved.
